Plan the Perfect Day at the Montpelier Hunt Races!

The Montpelier Hunt Races only happen once a year, so why not make it as enjoyable and stress-free as possible with a little planning? First and foremost, don’t forget your tickets! If they’ve arrived in the mail, be sure to have them ready. Purchasing tickets ahead of time not only guarantees a smoother entry on Race Day, but it also saves you money — ticket prices go up on the day of the event. Last-minute buyers can still get tickets at our outlets, skipping the hassle of waiting for delivery.

Dress for the Occasion

Dressing appropriately for the weather is key to enjoying your day. Since mornings can be chilly, layering is a great idea. Even in November, the sun can be strong, so if the forecast calls for clear skies, don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a sunhat. If rain is in the forecast, come prepared with waterproof shoes, a durable raincoat, and an umbrella. Don’t let less-than-perfect weather dampen your spirits—some of the best memories are made on those unpredictable race days. And rest assured, the races go on rain or shine!

Shop for the Holidays

Don’t forget to bring some cash! Whether you want to place a friendly bet, join a game pool, or pick up a race program, cash will come in handy. And while you’re here, be sure to explore the Montpelier Markets for some early holiday shopping. Whether you’re looking for a keepsake, a gift, or just a little something for yourself, our vendors offer a curated selection of unique items that you won’t want to miss.

Tailgate Like a Pro

Tailgating is a huge part of the Montpelier experience! Whether you're going all out for the Tailgate Contest or keeping things simple, a well-planned tailgate elevates the day. For safety reasons, we recommend using stemless plastic glasses for your drinks. If you’re looking for inspiration, Wine and Country Life has great tips on styling the ultimate steeplechase tailgate.

No time to pack a tailgate? No problem! Our food vendors have you covered with Southern favorites, Mexican cuisine, oysters, and more. Wine and beer will also be available for purchase throughout the day.

Enter the Hat Contest

In honor of the bicentennial of General Lafayette’s farewell tour of America, he will be a special guest at the Races, mingling with the crowd on foot or horseback. General Lafayette and Mr. Madison will be judging the Hat Contest, so don your finest headwear and prepare for a fun moment of fashion! And if you spot him, don’t hesitate to ask for a selfie (though you might need to explain what that is to the General)!

Know the Rules

For everyone’s safety and comfort, pets must stay at home. We do welcome service animals as per Federal ADA regulations, but please note that emotional support animals are not permitted on the grounds.
