Tailgate with French Flair

Tailgating is an American tradition at sporting events. The introduction of cars in the early 1900’s allowed alumni to visit their alma maters for football games and other sporting events. The lack of concessions required creative ways to fill the gap, and an elaborate picnic from the “boot” of the car was the go-to answer.

At Steeplechase events, tailgating becomes a sophisticated affair. Racegoers spend the entire day at the races, making the effort to set up an elaborate tailgate and prepare gourmet portable food worthwhile. Friendly competition among neighboring tailgate parties adds to the charm. Not to be outdone, some tailgaters dress their spreads with fresh flowers, china, silver and race-theme centerpieces, which led to the creation of the Montpelier Races Tailgate Contest.

The contest has been running for over a decade with enthusiastic participation. A few years ago, an annual theme was introduced to inspire contestants and guide the judges. This idea was quickly embraced, and the theme announcement is now eagerly anticipated each year. This year's theme, in honor of General Lafayette’s visit to the United States and Montpelier, is "La Cuisine Française, Bon Appétit!" Participants can serve French-themed food and decorate their tables accordingly.

The contest's sponsors, Wine and Country Living and Pres a Pres French Restaurant in Gordonsville, will each provide a judge. Abby Duck, chef at Pres a Pres, will be the celebrity chef judge. Prizes range from restaurant gift certificates to unique tabletop luxuries. There is no entry fee, but participants must inform the office of their intention to enter and their location to schedule a visit from the judges.
